Hanwha Creates School Forest at Primary School in Desertification Stricken Area in China

  • 10,000 Trees and Flowers Planted on May 28th at a Primary School in Ningxia Province
  • It Is the Fourth "Hanwha Solar Forest", an Afforestation Campaign to Prevent Desertification and Fight Climate Change

Hanwha Group created a school forest at a primary school in a desertification affected area as part of "Hanwha Solar Forest", a campaign to prevent desertification and fight climate change. A tree planting event was held on 28th at Jinglong Huimin Primary School in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Province to nurture a school forest for the students.

Hanwha Group (Chairman Seung Youn Kim) creates a school forest at a primary school in a region affected by desertification, as part of "Hanwha Solar Forest", the group's afforestation campaign to prevent desertification in China.

A tree planting event was held by Hanwha on 28th at Jinglong Huimin Primary School in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Autonomous Province to create a school forest for students.

Approximately 300 people including Mr. Young Rak Kim, Vice President of Hanwha Group China, officials from Tree Planet (a social enterprise), State Forestry Bureau, Ningxia Autonomous Province and Yinchuan City, and the school students attended the ceremony.

Yinchuan City is the representative region being severely affected by desertification in China, located between the Gobi Desert, known as the epicenter of yellow dust, and the Mu Us Desert. Yinchuan City is home to the Hui nationality, and students of Jinglong Huimin Primary School are barely able to see any trees and flowers around due to lack of budget.

Through the afforestation project, Hanwha Group is planning to create a windbreak against sandy dust and flower garden in a total area of 1,300 square meters. Various trees and flowers, 10,000 in total, will be planted including lacebark pine tree, Japanese cypress, ginkgo, platanus orientalis, Chinese maple tree, lilac, forsythia as well as day lily, chrysanthemum, and iris, all funded by Hanwha Group.

Along with the tree planting event, an educational program for the students of the Jinglong Huimin Primary School to help them understand the value of environment and become ecologically sensitive was also provided.

Hanwha Group, in partnership with Tree Planet, a social enterprise, has been conducting a campaign where smartphone users plant virtual trees through Tree Planet App, and Hanwha, in return, plants real trees in desertification-stricken regions.

Through the campaign, Hanwha Group created the first "Hanwha Solar Forest" in 2012 by planting 230,000 trees in Mongolia's Selenge Province Tujin Nars Nature Reserve, and planted another 200,000 trees in 2013 in the Mu Us Desert in Ningxia, China.

Last year, the Hanwha Group planted trees and laid down a land in grass at Usin Primary School in Seoul, Korea as part of the school forest project that aims to create forests for children who are alienated from nature while struggling with fine dust. The Jinlong Primary School project is the fourth project of the "Hanwha Solar Forest" campaign.

Mr. Young Rak Kim, Vice President of Hanwha Group China Headquarters said, "Hanwha Group is putting a lot of efforts in addressing climate change and environmental problems." "Regardless of nationality, it is important that children, the future of humanity, learn and grow healthy while appreciating the beauty of nature in a clean and green environment, which motivated our afforestation efforts in the desertification-stricken Ningxia region," he added.

Meanwhile, Hanwha Group in July 2012 donated an 80kW/h solar power facility that provides electricity to a tree nursery, which grew trees in an eco-friendly manner to help create the second "Hanwha Solar Forest" in 2013 to prevent desertification in Ningxia.

In addition, Hanwha Group is making contributions to local communities in China through "Hanwha Happy Sunshine" campaign which is designed to donate and install solar power equipment to primary schools in impoverished regions.

The beneficiaries include Yuyangguan Town Center Primary School in Wufeng County, Hubei province, and Xiegou Town Hope Primary School in Datong County, Qinghai Province, both of which are equipped with a 30kW roof-top solar system by Hanwha Group.
