Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. (HPSI) is a leading U.S. shipbuilder operating a state-of-the-art facility in Philadelphia’s historic Navy Yard. Situated on a 47.8-hectare (110-acre) site, the facility features one of the largest graving docks in the United States — measuring 332.8 meters (1,092 feet) in length and 45.7 meters (150 feet) in width — supported by a 598.7 metric-ton (660-ton) gantry crane capable of handling ultra-large vessel blocks. As a key contributor to oceangoing commercial vessel construction, the yard has delivered approximately 50% of all large oceangoing Jones Act commercial vessels since 2000, supported by large-scale infrastructure capable of executing complex shipbuilding programs.

As Hanwha’s U.S.-based shipbuilding center within its integrated maritime platform, Hanwha Philly Shipyard aims to usher in a new era of American shipbuilding, strengthening domestic maritime capability and contributing to global shipping resilience. The yard is positioned to lead efforts across infrastructure modernization, new shipyard construction, technology transfer, skilled workforce development, and supply chain resilience, while also overseeing ship construction and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. With the U.S. prioritizing the expansion of domestic industrial capacity, HPSI brings large-scale yard infrastructure, advanced engineering expertise, and disciplined execution that will help deliver the foundational capacity that is critical to meeting these aims.

Hanwha Philly Shipyard executes complex, multi-vessel programs for major maritime and energy operators, combining scalable production systems with rigorous quality and schedule performance to deliver large oceangoing commercial vessels including container ships, product tankers, and Aframax tankers. The yard is currently establishing LNG carrier construction capability — a critical step in reinforcing energy transportation infrastructure — having secured the first U.S. order for an export-market-viable LNG carrier in nearly 50 years. The order, issued by Hanwha Shipping in 2025, marked a significant milestone in restoring advanced LNG shipbuilding capability in the U.S., and also came with an option for a second LNG carrier that was exercised later that year. Additionally, HPSI’s current orderbook includes a four-vessel program of medium-range (MR) oil and chemical tankers, with options for up to six additional vessels, with deliveries beginning in 2029. These developments underscore HPSI’s role in strengthening American commercial shipbuilding capacity amid a renewed focus on industrial resilience.

Beyond commercial shipbuilding, Hanwha Philly Shipyard delivers complex public-sector programs, including the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) contract, commissioned by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD). The five-vessel NSMV program supports U.S. maritime academies and national readiness objectives. Designed for both mariner training and humanitarian assistance or disaster relief missions, the NSMV platform includes advanced training facilities, hospital facilities, and helicopter support infrastructure. These purpose-built, multi-mission platforms demonstrate the yard’s ability to execute technically demanding projects while contributing to maritime workforce development and strengthening sovereign shipbuilding capability.

Hanwha Philly Shipyard provides comprehensive MRO services that extend vessel life cycles and enhance fleet performance. Leveraging yard-scale infrastructure, the yard executes complex dry-docking, retrofit, and upgrade programs with disciplined technical execution. By aligning newbuild expertise with lifecycle services, HPSI delivers coordinated build-and-service solutions that strengthen asset reliability and operational efficiency, advancing Hanwha’s role as a trusted maritime partner.

Looking ahead, Hanwha Philly Shipyard is advancing future-ready maritime solutions aligned with evolving regulations, integrating fuel-flexible design, digital production systems, and operational expertise to enhance long-term vessel performance and efficiency. Hanwha Group is working toward a goal of increasing annual output at HPSI to up to 20 vessels per year through new dry docks, expanded quays, and advanced production facilities. Connected to Hanwha Group’s broader capabilities of energy transport and advanced propulsion, the yard contributes to the development of scalable, technology-driven shipbuilding aligned with global needs for energy security.

Through cross-industry collaboration and technological integration, Hanwha Philly Shipyard strengthens resilient global supply chains and delivers the foundational maritime systems that support industrial capacity, enhance energy security, and reinforce long-term economic resilience.
